On October 6, 2018, numerous families and friends of the Greater Montreal Portuguese community gathered at the Notre-Dame-de-Fatima community centre in Laval in support of our diabetic children. The exceptional organizing committee generously supported and accompanied the Bello family to offer everyone a fun and lively evening. Several prizes were raffled off during the evening. One of the winners, Mr. Van Dung Hua came to our office and received his prize from Juliana Braveza — two return tickets from Toronto to Portugal offered by the company TAP.
Myrhza Bello and her daughter Caleah, a Carowanis camper, hosted the evening. They introduced Dr. Robert Barnes, a pediatric endocrinologist at MCH, who clearly explained to the guests the daily challenges associated with type 1 “juvenile” diabetes , and the crucial role that Camp Carowanis plays in developing diabetic children’s independence.
Diabetic Children’s Foundation and Camp Carowanis Executive Director, Danielle Brien, then shared her experience as a parent of diabetic children and applauded the courage and extraordinary commitment required from parents and the entire family. Danielle finished by warmly thanking the guests for their generous contribution to the success of the evening, which raised $15,000 and will contribute to caring for all diabetic children in Quebec regardless of language, culture, religious or political beliefs.
