Certified by the Association des camps du Québec (ACQ), Camp Carowanis is spread over more than 150 acres amid a forest on the shore of Lake Didi, near Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, in the Laurentians. Since 1958, Camp Carowanis has changed the lives of countless youngsters with insulin-dependent diabetes.

Each summer for almost 60 years, close to 300 diabetic boys and girls have enjoyed an unforgettable outdoor experience at Camp Carowanis.

The Camp’s main purpose is to encourage young people to become more autonomous and rigorous in managing their diabetes, in a fun, stimulating setting. Opportunities for learning, dialogue and sharing abound, and youngsters realize that they are not alone with their disease. A stay at Camp Carowanis is an ideal chance for children to build precious, lasting friendships that go beyond language, culture and social status.

Young campers are closely supervised by a large team of “guardian angels” — counsellors, physicians, nurses, cooks and nutritionists, often diabetic themselves. The well-being and self-fulfilment of each and every child are at the core of the camp’s mission.

No diabetic child is turned away from Camp Carowanis. A program of full and partial subsidies is available.

More than a vacation camp: A life lesson

A stay at Camp Carowanis is a trip to autonomy. In addition to encouraging children to excel, activities and shared experiences are learning opportunities that help break down campers’ feeling that they are alone because they are different. The Camp is a chance for youngsters to make friends and meet older children and adults who face the same challenges and speak the same language.

Camp Carowanis also gives parents some downtime, with no need to worry about their children, and is an excellent forum for them to meet and chat with other mothers and fathers.
